I have mixed feelings about this rose. I bought and planted him in 2019. All spring he suffered greatly (though our cool and wet spring weather was hard on all my roses) and I nearly had to give him the shovel because I was sick of dealing with the constant blackspot and blight. Since the weather has warmed up though and with some treatments, he has transformed into a healthy, beautiful showstopper with fragrant and striking blooms and beautiful foliage. I am glad I stuck it out. Buy with caution and be ready, because he can be a drama queen in hot and humid zones.

Don Juan is in his second year and doing very well. His cut flowers last longer than any of my other roses. The color is a deep blood red. He is still a little guy, but in my rocky clay Utah soil buying smaller roses and allowing their roots to find their way has been much better than bigger plants. I also wash the roots before planting which has been much better. All my roses are still small in their second year, those 3 to 4 years old shoot up and become quite stunning. Don Juan has exceeded my expectations. As I live at altitude in the dry west I have had none of the problems the other reviewer had.

Every plant, including 5’ fruits and deciduous things, plus my evergreen trees, plus 6’ bushes, absolutely Quake and Shiver as I walk past them. They know that their time in that spot is temporary and they will be moved. Not my Rosy Roses. My beauteous blossoming plants. They LOVE to be transplanted. New neighbors on both sides, plus that different location! City smog replaced with country breezes. Midwest freezing dessicating ice winds to a softly sheltered East sun hug in. Who wouldn’t be stretching in luxurious surroundings? Don Juan this year lived on my hot deck for 4 months in a little cramped 5” pot with 3” of dirt and some Colorado advertisements on top of his roots. If Don made it through this, Don could make it through anything.!!!!! He finally got planted under my sewing room East but shaded window, and oh my gawd, immediately shot up about 12” and bursting with strong green cane. I am afraid that Don will take over my window next year, but actually I am waiting for the blooms the redness the aroma the happiness of it all. It takes me forever to plant my rose pals but they all know they are on-the-list. The A list!
