Rambler / Hybrid Multiflora (Johann Christoph Schmidt, Germany, 1909)
Clusters of small, apple scented semi-double flowers begin a deep violet shade and age to mauve. Nearly thorn-less canes with glossy, disease resistant green foliage grow to 12 feet in warm climates or as a large, mounding shrub in cold areas. Beautiful reddish-purple fall foliage.
Pronounced: FIYL-h(k)hen-blaow – from French Rose Names by Diana Bellucci

I only planted this rose this past spring, and have not yet seen the flowers since it’s once-blooming. However, it has been growing very fast! So it gets 5 stars for health and vigor. I have it planted near a tall willow, where it gets direct morning sun and then dappled shade the rest of the day. It’s been healthy, with no sign of blackspot. So far, it’s doing exactly what a rambler should.

I love this rose. The color of the bunches of blossoms is unlike any other rose. And each bunch has blossoms with varying shades of violet. Unfortunately, I had it for a few years and then it didn’t survive a winter in my Massachusetts garden. I’d plant it again without hesitation.

Mine finally bloomed the 2nd yr with very nice semi double orange red flowers. But when I compared it online with David Austin and others it was nothing like the violet highly fragrant bloom that it was supposed to be. I definitely think this one is mislabeled.

Hi Ivan, Thanks for your message. We guarantee our roses to be true to name and I’m happy to send a replacement. I did pull your order history and I don’t see A Veilchenblau rose on there. Is there any way I could get you to email me a picture of the rose and tag? I’m happy to get your order straightened out. Email: matt@highcountryroses.com
