Bourbon (Massimiliano Lodi, Italy, before 1909)
Walking through the garden, it is impossible to miss Variegata di Bologna’s striking purple and creamy-white striped blooms. Blooms are large, double and very fragrant. The canes can spread 5 to 9 feet, depending on pruning and climate, and have neat, nearly evergreen foliage.

What she lacks in disease resistance (zone7a) she makes up in growth. Bought 2019 and since then she has grown tenfold making her a massive, quick growing statement in the garden. Keep an eye out for mildew and fungus if you are in a hot and humid climate. Either way, I think she has been worth the fuss.

only had it for one growing season. it is definitely following the first year it sleeps, ….. I gues I will see if it creeps next year
Brandon Garner (verified owner) –
it bloomed this spring and wound up being a solid pink color, with no variegation to it at all.
Linda Carolan –
This is a precious collector rose, one of the most beautiful of the striped roses.

Mine started to “revert” last year (may be Brandon Garner’s issue?). I will watch it this year and hope that it hasn’t ALL reverted. Will prune out reversion. I do love it, though!

I have had this rose for 10 years and it does get big. Mine has never reverted completely however it will always have a few canes with all solid purple- or magenta-colored blooms. Makes for kind of a fun springtime surprise. I have been meaning to try and root one of the solid purple canes because they tend be to be larger and more fragrant than the variegated or striped blooms.
