Hybrid Perpetual (Roussel, France, 1853)
Historically known as “General Jack” and a parent of many red hybrid teas, Général Jacqueminot is a classic staple in any old garden rose collection. An upright bush reaching 5 feet with full, cabbagy, highly fragrant blooms of cherry red. Summer bloom with some repeat.
The flower was named in honor of Jean-François Jacqueminot (1787-1865), a French general of the Napoleonic Wars.
Pronounced: zhay-nay-hrahl zhahk-mee-not – from French Rose Names by Diana Bellucci

I grew Général Jacqueminot for several years in zone 3 North Dakota at a farmhouse I rented. The environment was extremely harsh. Harsher actually in the summer than in the winter as I got excellent snow cover in the winter. I gardened organically in the middle of Monsanto country. About 40 feet away from that rose was a heavily and chronically sprayed Monsanto field. Also the wind on the prairie is something you can’t imagine unless you’ve lived through it. Regularly 50 mph winds ripping through. Often more with gusts. No shelter from shade. Full sun 14+ hours a day. Many days over 100° F. Brutal drought. I just want to be clear that my review of this rose is in that of very high stress growing seasons. I did deep water. I did compost. So every spring it would leaf out beautifully. And was covered in the most beautiful romantic blooms. And the fragrance was so so beautiful. Worth growing just for the fragrance. My bush never got large. Under 2 feet. After that initial beautiful, healthy flush of blossoms it’s leaves would eventually all fall off from black spot. It would occasionally try to put out a few more leaves and blooms through the rest of the brutal summer. I believe if I would have sprayed with fungicide I could have maintained a healthier plant in that environment. But I also believe that the high stress took its toll. I will say all the other roses I grew were quite resistant to black spot and this was the only one that succumbed. But it was also in the most unprotected spot. I think this is an absolutely gorgeous rose and I can only imagine how exquisite it would be in a kinder environment. I fully realize too that I was zone cheating. I knew it bloomed on new wood and so even when it had die back it still sprang back up in the spring and bloomed. I still have very romantic feelings for this rose. Some roses make you feel something.

Correction to my review above. It grew under 3 feet tall. Not under 2 feet.
